Lonely Dog Sleeps With Owner’s Shoe in Adorable Surveillance Video

Though dogs often are blamed with chewing their owners’ shoes to bits, this pup just seems to want a shoe to remember her owner while they’re out.

In a brief video clip posted to Reddit‘s popular r/aww forum by u/pietradolce, a bull terrier can be seen walking into the living room gently carrying a sneaker. She then hops up on the couch and curls up with the shoe, resting her head next to it, presumably before drifting off to sleep.

The clip, titled “Surveillance camera catching a dog taking their owner’s shoe when they are not in the house and sleeping besides it.” has received nearly 50,000 upvotes and 800 comments in seven hours.

Just like people miss their friends and family when they’re away, dogs can miss their owners. While the pup in this video has a good—and adorable—coping mechanism, sometimes dogs can lash out when they’re left alone. This is called separation anxiety, but thankfully, with training, dogs can learn to become less anxious and realize that their owners will be back soon.

Separation anxiety can manifest itself in many different ways, depending on the dog. Anxious dogs can urinate and defecate indoors; bark and howl, disturbing neighbors; destroy items in the home or even try to escape, according to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA). While no one is sure why dogs can have separation anxiety, the ASPCA says the current belief is that it’s triggered by the loss of someone important in the dog’s life, be it through death or the dog being surrendered to a shelter.

If a dog has separation anxiety, the ASPCA recommends “counterconditioning,” or making it so the dog associates its owner leaving with something good. For example, a puzzle toy with a favorite food can be a good tool, the ASPCA says. An owner can give the dog this toy whenever they leave—not only does the toy give the dog something to focus on, it will learn to look forward to the treat as well.

In more severe cases of separation anxiety, though, more intensive training is required. In this case, it can help to do repeated instances of leaving for very short times, where the owner returns before the dog has a chance to get upset, the ASPCA says. Gradually increase the amount of time the owner is away, and soon the dog will realize its owner is always going to come back.

Redditors celebrated the adorable video in a number of ways, including a reworking of the classic “Now I Lay Me Down to Sleep” prayer.

“now i lay me down to sleep / this stinky shoe i gonna keep / n cuddle it the whole night through / cuz it’s the one that smells like you / i miss you, dad – my heart it ouch / (is hard to climb up on the couch…) / but i get up n sleep with this / it comforts me, when you i miss / cuz No one takes the place of You / so i’ll dream on / your stinkin shoe,” u/SchnoodleDoodleDo wrote.

Other Redditors chimed in—though usually not in verse.

“Mine does this! It’s always the same pair of sandals (sometimes one, sometimes both). I’ve been collecting videos of her stealing my sandals and clothes to hang out with,” u/fledglingnomad wrote.

“I had a cat that loved my smell. I would come in from gardening sweaty and smelly, and find her sleeping on the couch. I’d take off my t-shirt and cover her with it, and she would immediately start purring loudly,” u/The_Original_Gronkie wrote.

“This is actually why I won’t get a dog, even though I really want one,” u/Kolvez wrote. “I’d be gone for 12+ hours on work days, then sleep, then work again. It’s sad and borderline cruel for the dog.”

“My boy does the same but with socks, everytime I comeback I have a couch full of socks. Sometimes he does it while I’m actually laying on it. He loves my smelly socks I guess, weirdo,” u/Radgost wrote.
